Play It Well

  • Life IS Sport does not suggest that life is all about sports but rather that life itself IS a sport. We celebrate sport as a game and for the opportunity to PLAY, to experience fun, exercise, community and passion. We celebrate sport as a metaphor for life and the opportunity to LEARN, to experience victory, defeat, leadership and teamwork. We celebrate sport for its global presence and the opportunity to GIVE, to offer love, hope, dreams and opportunity. We want to share stories that inspire you to PLAY, LEARN & GIVE to make your community and the world a better place.

The Value of a Game

  • "We all experience the pressure to be our best. And many of us, whether we grow up to be an actor, a CEO, a mechanic or a football star, have our first brush with greatness while playing sports in our youth." ~ Jim Brown

Gilbert Arenas Scores for Schools

Arenas Gilbert Arenas is an All Star guard for the NBA's Washington Wizards and was the 4th leading scorer in the NBA last season.  But it is Gilbert's real life stats that are the most impressive.  Arenas is a past winner of the NBA's Community Assist Award, is a mentor to a young boy in the D.C. area and has created the Zero Two Hero Foundation.

Since joining the Wizards in 2003, Arenas has been very active in the Washington, DC community.

For the past three years Arenas has hosted “Gilbert’s Christmas Dream” during the holiday season to benefit underprivileged D.C. area children. In September of 2005, Arenas purchased $18,000 worth of goods and delivered them to Hurricane Katrina victims sheltered at the D.C. Armory.

Last season, in partnership with Abe Pollin, the Wizards owner, Arenas created a great charity called Scores for Schools that raised over $200,000 for local schools . The concept is pretty simple, Arenas and Pollin will donate $100 per point scored by Gilbert during every Wizards regular season game for the 2007-2008 season to local D.C. area schools.

Tony Dungy reaches out to a truck driver

Dungy
The biggest story in sports this week is the "AFC Super Bowl" showdown on Sunday between the Colts and the  Patriots.  My buddy Brian Cole reminded me of a story we both had read earlier this year about Coach Tony Dungy.

Dungy's reputation as a coach is only superceded by his reputation as a human being. His oldest son's tragic death by suicide and Dungy's stoic faith in the aftermath was well documented.  What you may not know is how Dungy reached out to Mark Lemke, an every day man who suffered the loss of a son as well.

Read about it in this heartwarming Rick Reilly article.

Check out Dungy's best selling book, Quiet Strength: The Principles, Practices, & Priorities of a Winning Life on Amazon.
